Decluttering your clothes is as easy as 123

Wherever you are in the world, the seasons change every three to six months and it’s either warming up or cooling down in your part of the world.

Whatever your situation, take the time to sort out your wardrobe.

Pareto’s Principle states that 20% of your efforts result in 80% of your results.

Did you know that this principle also applies to your wardrobe?

That’s right – you only wear 20% of your clothes 80% of the time.

The aim of your wardrobe is to have clothes you love, that look good on you and that flatter your body shape.

I’ve been reading up a lot on clothes websites and blogs and I gathered some tips for everybody:

If you wore the fashion the first time around, you shouldn’t be wearing it this time 😉

Even if it still fits you, the styles and colours will have changed.

Pleated and tapered pants are out for all body shapes. Aren’t you glad?!

Now let’s get busy purging and organising your clothes.

1. Put on some upbeat music and call a friend or professional organiser to help you.

2. Set aside an afternoon and remove everything from your wardrobe.

3. Make 3 piles:

• Clothes you don’t love, don’t suit your lifestyle or don’t look good on you

• Clothes you love and that fit you properly

• Clothes that you’re not sure about, for whatever reason

4. Action the piles

• Donate or throw out

• Organise in your wardrobe or on your shelves according to your personal preferences – by colour, style (smart, casual, etc), or season/ sleeve length, etc.

• Move to another place in the house or to a storage container. Make a note in your planner or in Outlook to look at this pile again at a later date (I like to think of this as a pending file for your clothes).

When you look at this pile again, fit everything on. You will then be able to look at the clothes unemotionally and decide whether they deserve to take up space in your wardrobe (you want to keep them) or whether they need to be donated.

Rather have half the amount of clothes and be able to wear everything than a full-to-overflowing wardrobe where you can only wear a few items.

When was the last time you decluttered some clothes?

I’ve been having a hard time with the clothes decluttering lately–I’m 5 mo. pregnant so there’s all kinds of stuff that is starting to no longer fit right now…but after the baby comes back out, there’s a very good chance most (but likely not all) of those too tight clothes will suddenly fit again, so its tough to get rid of anything from the “doesn’t fit” category (though the “don’t love” and “didn’t fit *well* even when I wasn’t” categories are still fair game to toss).

Did you have any special strategies for decluttering your closet when you were pregnant with the twins? I’ve tried to start a few boxes of non-pregnant clothes and every time I go to wear something and it doesn’t fit, it goes in one of my non-pregnant boxes and in a few months I hope to go through the boxes and declutter as I re-introduce the “regular” wardrobe.

      Jessica, CONGRATULATIONS!

I did much like you when pregnant – tossed the stuff that I didn’t love or didn’t look good before. I moved things around in my cupboard so I had all my maternity things on one shelf – I only bought jeans, 2 pairs of casual and 2 pairs of work pants so I didn’t have much.

If you want to box up, that’ll also work (I didn’t have the energy ;)) but one thing I will say – clearly label….

After the baby’s born, you can start getting back in your clothes again.

Mine are 8 months so I’ve given up on a lot of the clothes (impatient!) although people have said give it a year! A year! Thing is your actual body changes – I was at pre-preg weight but still couldn’t close some zips, etc 🙂

  2. I’ve already started purging. I’m going to have to replace some of my things, though. I just don’t like shopping anymore, though.

  3. I HAVE STARTED PURGING MY CLOTHES. I HAVE LOST 160LBS AND AM STILL LOSING. EVEN THOUGH THE CLOTHES ARE STILL GOOD AND COULD BE ALTERED I AM GIVING THEM AWAY. STARTING OVER WITH DIFFERENT STYLES AND TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE “FAT” MENTALITY.

  4. I need to purge my clothes! The past 4 years, I’ve had to buy more formal wear and dressier clothes for events. Now that thingss are finally winding down, I can get rid of some of these clothes (some I can’t fit anymore from zillions of meals out, but did well considering I didn’t gain weight til this past year). Fortunately, I bought mostly seperates so I can still use some of them (sitll have formals to attend) but the dresses and gowns can be recyled.

Our group has had a clothing swap, so that has worked out well. Whatever was left over was donated to a career shop. I’m planning to set up another one in June.
