Question of the week – photo organising

I’m getting to be reasonably organised with my photos but I’m still not where I want to be.

There’s the downloading and backing up, the sorting into folders, the printing, the putting in albums or on the walls.

All so much!

My favourite thing that I do is I make a folder called “photos to print” and as I’m sorting and organising, I copy and paste (this is important so I can delete the whole folder afterwards) the photos in here. When I go to my printing place, I can just say “print all the pics in the photos to print folder”.

Easy-peasy.

So share with me, what is your absolute best tip when it comes to organising your photos?

  1. My best tool is a software called ACDSee. It allows you to tag your pictures with keywords so that you can easily click on one category and find all pics tagged with that or those word(s). For example I have 3 main categories:
    – “when” with subcategories for the 4 seasons + Christmas,
    – “who” with subcategories like friends (and sub-sub-categories for each “family”), close family (my parents and brother), my mom’s family, my dad’s family, my boyfriend’s family, even pets, etc.
    – “what” with subcategories like landscapes, TTC-related, weight-loss related, etc.
I have a lot of detail because I scrapbook, so when I look for a picture with my mom and brother for example, I want to find it quickly in my 5+ years of digital pictures. I love your idea of “to print” file, though, and I do the same in ACDSee with a specific tag, for example when I prepared a photobook for my inlaws last Christmas. Once I’m done, I just have to delete the tag and the pix remain intact with their other tags.

Sorry for the novel, but I love this tool! LOL It’s just a tool, though, it only works if you use it, it requires some discipline to tag everything once you get it out of camera, that’s the simplest way to always stay on top of it.

  2. Chloe, I love your categories.

It’s something I battle with – so I have date folders and weird ones like skies, food, organising, etc 🙂

  3. I save all pictures by date. Folder subdivisions look like this:
    Year/Month/Date+Description

So my DD’s birthday party would look like 2011/02-11/02-12-11 Bday Party

But I love the idea of tagging your photos. I know I can do that when I save them online, but I can’t do that on my computer. Yet.

Another great tip is to save everything at least twice. Save to your computer, then burn a disc or copy onto an external drive. That way, if a disaster happens, you can just grab your disks or drives and save your pictures. Also save your pictures to an online site. Shutterfly, Snapfish, Picaboo, etc. Any of those sites will allow you to save your pictures for free, and also allow you to share them with others (like Grandma) for free. Different sites have different printing options. Some will print your pics and send them, others will send your pics to a local store for near immediate pick up.

Great tips, Heather. I’d love to know about some of your other folder names 🙂
