I’m not working now, but I have so many really nice work clothes that I’m hanging on to. I went through things this morning and culled a few pieces that I hadn’t worn in the last year or two at work, but I’m hanging on to all my suits and jackets and blouses – most are classic and *should* still be in style in another three years (I think!).
This feels like the right approach…to keep classic items that still fit…but it seems weird in some ways that at least 1/2 my closet is taken by things I don’t wear at all right now.
Any thoughts?
Of course I do – plenty!
Really look at those work clothes in your wardrobe, even the classic ones, and be 100% honest with yourself.
Do you honestly LOVE the pieces?
Do they make you feel WONDERFUL?
Do they flatter your body type? If you’re not sure, I recommend MissusSmartypants (no affilliate commission – I personally have got TONS of compliments when I use her tips :))
If the answers to all 3 of these questions is yes, then I’d keep the clothes. Otherwise, you won’t wear them and they’ll become part of the 80% of your wardrobe.
Those are my opinion.
What do the other readers think?
P.S. Have you prepped your clothes for tomorrow? 🙂

Mmmm…honestly? If I haven’t worn something for an entire year I toss it. How about just keeping two suits, a jacket and two blouses? Then it won’t feel like you have half a cupboard of clothing that you don’t wear.
And yes, my clothes are prepped for tomorrow. Actually they are mostly prepped for the entire week. It helps that I don’t have too many options to choose from…
Julia, you’re strict 🙂 Sooo difficult when they are truly classic and you spent money on them. I have a couple in my wardrobe, one size down. I can wear the jackets but the skirts don’t fit but boy, they make me feel good 🙂
I always get my clothes etc ready for the next day as well as for the kids. If not there is no way we will get out of here in time.
That’s how I feel. Am afraid I’m just not a morning person and I don’t think all that clearly in the morning either 🙂
Thanks for provided this section,Thank you for sharing the data.I steal it very much.it is very useful for me.
What I think is…. is that you could bless someone else with those clothes right now. I know my community has a program that helps provide appropriate work attire for women who are looking for work and can’t afford them. You don’t need these clothes right now but someone out there does! Donate them.
Lesa, I do love that idea! It’s definitely a mindshift to ask, “who can use this today?” instead of “I might use this someday”
