Gift wrap – pretty but frugal gift wrap

I like things to look pretty but I don’t like to waste money.

A gift bag plus tissue paper can cost R30, and that’s before the cost of the present.

So how do I make sure my gifts still look good but the packaging doesn’t break the bank?

  1. I have a variety of wrapping paper in shades that will suit both girls and boys. I do have specific boy and girl colours, but the bulk is unisex paper.
  2. I prefer brown kraft paper but I’m trying to finish a number of rolls of paper first before stocking up again.
  3. I do splash out on nice, satin ribbon.
  4. A pretty bow does wonders for anything plain and transforms from drab to fab.
  5. Add a gift tag and you’re good to go. I make my own tags with my circle or tag punches. There are also free printables all over the internet, to suit your style. Check my free printables Pinterest board.

A tip – the minute you have a scrap of paper, punch out some shapes and keep those in a dedicated spot (I use a plastic container), and then throw the paper away.

Don’t those gifts look gorgeous? I certainly like receiving a nicely-wrapped gift. It’s almost better than the present sometimes.

And I love wrapping gifts.

Last night I wrapped 9 gifts and I was in heaven šŸ™‚ The study was a mess with wrapping paper, ribbon, scissors all over but it was a constructive mess, right?

What’s your gift-wrapping style?

Do you hate it? Love it?

  1. I am a last minute wrapper and pass the task on to Aaron if at all possible.

  2. I love wrapping presents! I’ve finally used up my stash of Christmas paper so I’m using brown craft paper and yarn this year.

  3. I’m not much of a wrapper – I get very frustrated with it very fast – as I feel it is super expensive to buy paper and ribbons – tags are cheep – just buy them after Christmas at 90% off!

SO … I use gift bags and tissue paper.

That I carefully fold and save and reuse year after year after year. Some bags have become super special – like the giraffe bag that Kendra gets a gift in every year … or a penguin bag for Vannan. … Tissue paper gets folded and reused – and we watch those after Christmas sales for paper and ribbon and other tissue for the following year for stuff that just won’t fit in a bag or is too heavy for a bag.

For me – the gift is more important than the wrapping paper – as it all gets tossed in the trash. BUT it is the THOUGHT that is the most important … and I don’t just mean “oh dear, I need to get something for Rachel, oh, this will do.” type of thought.

I take great pains to find out favorite colors, scents, animals, hobbies, etc – and try to find something that the recipient will like …. though some I haven’t a clue after years and years of giving. Like my FIL – if he wants something, he goes and gets it. He likes fishing. He likes to use things like hot dogs and picks up stuff on the beach to bring home and reuse. … Or some of the adults that say, “oh anything will do.” .. no matter how often you ask them. … Tell me you like mint chocolate, and your favorite color is blue – and you love pumpkin candles …. I can work with that! LOL

Of course – I have a “non-existent” budget as well – even smaller this year than the last few years (Tim is reffing again after his heart attack – but so many bills to pay now) … so I have to think about what I can afford to make. I really want to learn how to make “real” candles and “real” soap. ….

Ok … I’ll quit now. Hugs!

  4. Great minds think alike… I too have wrapped several gifts yesterday evening! I have two wrapping papers: one kraft, the other one dark red / burgundy. Add to that white, red and silver ribbons in various sizes plus a couple scrap supplies like punches, and you get a happy Chloe. I’ve also been known to wrap gifts in plain white paper and draw / stamp on it to make my own pattern.

  5. It depends – I often re-use gift bags if it is for kids parties – we have a big box full of them and kids dont often appreciate wrapping.

For friends I wrap it fancier but also do it cheaply – I always have plain coloured paper that you use to cover school books and then I make it fancy with ribbons and labels!

I REALLY must get myself some punches!!

  6. Those gifts DO look beautiful, you clever girl! Thanks for all the wonderful ideas, and especially the “free printables”. Now I just need to MAKE some time to sit at my computer one night, print and cut etc etc. I see your circle punch has already been so useful and worth paying what it cost, after looking for one for SO long!

  7. Very pretty! I am slowly getting into the whole gift wrapping process. I actually pinned something earlier where you use plain white paper and jazz it up with washi tape…
I really need to invest in a good circle punch…
