My word for 2012

Happy New Year!

First, a quick reflection on my 2011 word of the year, courage.

That word served me very well.

I spoke up, stepped out, emailed more, made myself more vulnerable, asked for help more (although still not enough), shared more of myself and found my courage again.

It helped having little reminders like a print on my desk, my courage necklace and a card from a friend.

Before I go into this year’s word, let me share briefly why I think everyone should have one word for the year:

1. Even if you don’t “do goals”, your word will guide you in your decisions and actions
2. It’s easier than a laundry list of to dos
3. It creates intention for your year.

E.g.
* If I was dilly-dallying, I’d say, “what would a person of courage do?” and then write the email or go speak to someone or deal with the confrontation. It wasn’t always easy but it was always satisfying afterwards.

I make my clients go through this process too. It helps them as I can look objectively at their situations and ask them, “is this going to achieve _____ in your life?” 🙂

I find that some people know immediately what their word will be and others need to let it sit for awhile.

Don’t rush the process – take your time.

So…. my word for 2012 is create.

Yes, to Create things with my hands – pretty things that let me have a creative outlet but also

1. Create a legacy for my kids, create fun times for us together
2. Create an awesome marriage
3. Create a fun and productive work environment
4. Create moments of happiness and smiles for friends and people I bump into
5. create meaningful relationships with friends
6. create a book… or two
7. create products in my business again

Basically, I want to go about my days thinking, what will I create today? and what am I creating in this moment?

It’s about being purposeful and intentional in every area of my life.

What about you? What is your one word for 2012?

  3. VALUE

That’s my one word for 2012. I do not want to be a slave to the calendar, the clock, or other people. That’s how I feel when I get overwhelmed. I want to pause and assess the value of the activity – and how it lines up with what I say my personal value are. There is much value in all I do – even the things that overwhelm me. Recognizing the value – or lack of – will change my priorities and my outlook.

I could have said CREATE and NURTURE as both of those are in my recent journaling as areas that have great VALUE for me. It’s not the things I love that I struggle finding time for — it’s the daily stuff. And the daily stuff has much VALUE too!

    Have a great 2012!

  4. That’s smart! I’ve decided that I want my 2012 word to be cherish. I want to try to appreciate everything I have, and I want to cherish the year’s moments in my heart. 🙂
    Happy 2012 (:

  5. Love your words, both the one you had last year and the one for 2012. Mine is RESPECT, and I broke it down to cover 12 different areas (one for each month). I’ve blogged about it if you’re interested…

  6. Wonderful word Marcia! I have CREATE as one of my goals for this year. My Word for the year is AUTHENTICITY – I want to create a life that is authentic for me. This word helps me be mindful of what I am doing in all aspects of my life – work, and home, It makes it easier to say no to things that are not part of the world that I want to create and easier to say yes to the things that are.

    Happy New Year!

  7. My word this year is FREEDOM. No more dieting or “taking away” from my life – I am having myself permission to become to person I want to be! The freedom from guilt if I slip up and have some chocolate (because who can live without it?)The freedom to go to the pool more often to work out! The freedom to say NO to other people and YES to myself! The freedom to expand my businesses to where I know they need to be! The freedom to spend time with my husband without feeling guilty about all the other things I “should” be doing. All of this is inspired by George Michael’s song Freedom. Really read those lyrics and how it can apply to your life and its very invigorating! FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So poignant reading this comment again, Melissa, knowing that George Michael died so recently 🙁
