Friends, I’ve made you an easy-peasy organising roadmap for 2016. You can find it here.
Let’s run through all the words of the year I’ve had in the past:
- simplify
- consolidate
- courage
- create
- trust
- shine
- enough
The thing about a word for the year is that it helps you be more intentional about what you want and need, and also who you need to be or what you want to do more of.
Of course, I do goals (and boy, do I do goals) but the word of the year is something that really guides those daily decisions and choices.
The year I had the word courage, I’d say “what would courage look like in this situation?” or the year of trust, I’d say “how can I trust more?”
Unlike last year when I still didn’t have my word til about the first week of January, this year I had my word early in December.
Maybe it was linked to the big decision?
But aside from that, the question, “does this spark joy?” has featured so much in my life in the last 6 months since I read the book, that I’m not ready to let it go yet.
My 2016 word of the year is JOY. There are 214 instances of the word JOY in the Bible. Can you believe it?
- does this spark joy?
- how can I bring more joy?
- will this bring me joy?
- what can I do to have more joy?
These are all the questions I’m going to be exploring this year and I can’t wait.
I even found this tip on Instagram…
Joy is the best makeup – Anne Lamott
Amen to that!
Over to you.
What is your word for the year?

My word is “reclaim” as in prayer life, routine home life, family time, health, and sanity. =D
I remember being young (college age) and life seemed in such great array. I know that these specific things have gotten away from me now that I’m 50. Let’s get it!
I love reclaim. Can you share some specific actions you plan to take?
I’m waking up earlier to reclaim my quiet prayer time. I’m going back to the FlyLady’s routines to reclaim cleaning my home. I’m turning off Facebook, etc. to reclaim family time. I’m ACTUALLY writing down what I eat and my workouts (usually walking) to reclaim my health. =D
My previous words of the year were ruthless (as in getting rid of as much “stuff” around the house as possible), balance (as in still doing things for others, but adding more things for me to be done too), and cleanse (as in purging myself from toxic friends and “stuff”). This year my word is “Nike” (as in “Just Do It” – because I have ONE word of the year and not three, LOL). So far so good, but it IS, after all, only Jan 4!
oh my, that’s a great word for clearing clutter!
Nike is my “mantra” at work 😉
Last year was “responsibility,” and I don’t feel that I fulfilled all aspects of it. This year, my word is “better” and it already is.
Sheri, have you read Better than Before? If not, it’s a great book to set up your year for success.
I have read it, and I think that’s what influenced my word choice. I think it’s time to take another look. I also appreciate your positive mind-set and good example.
First I’m so happy you have comments here again.
Such a great word, and gosh has Konmari worked for you 🙂 Mine, as you know, is a phrase: say yes to what scares me.
it has been FANTASTIC for me!
PS I asked Trisha (virtual assistant) to go check what was going on because I allowed comments on that closing down post and nothing was showing.
Hi, my word for this year is Reset. Last year my word was Hope (and I sure needed hope!) So I’m looking forward to resetting everything…
Oh I love Joy! I can just see the happy it will bring.
🙂 🙂 what is your word?
