Organise your finances

I do a free organising talk at my church every month.

This topic was not on the agenda for this month but I somehow sense that it is very necessary for the people in the current group and any others who may want to join.

Finances are very big on my mind this year as I have some Big Financial Goals.

Do you have some big goals?

If you’re in Jhb and you want help with organising your finances, please join me for a free talk at

Christian Family Church
Cnr Atlas Road and Silver Wings Blvd
Kempton Park

Date: Monday 16 May
Time: 7 – 8:30
Please bring: R20 for handout and a friend

I’ve already mapped out my talk and am SO excited.

Here are some of the things we’ll cover:

  • what financial freedom means to you
  • 3 things you must do before you even grab the calculator
  • 2 things that have to be set up first and not last
  • budgeting in the best way for you
  • practical systems to put in place
  • 3 quick ways you can save thousands every year (I have about 10 but only time to share 3)
  • how to turn your finances into a game
  • and much more

If you can’t make it or don’t live in Jhb, but you are interested, let me know by leaving a comment (linked to your email address).

If there’s enough interest I may do a teleseminar and then throw in the Financial Freedom e-course (no longer for sale but only for coaching clients) afterwards as it’s a fantastic support and accountability tool .

So, will I see you there?

How I made R1000 in a little under an hour

I’ve just checked my credit card statement and there’s a total of just over R1000 in credit.

Can I tell you what that’s due to?

I returned things to 4 stores that I bought on impulse.

Apparently when I got home I just tossed them in a cupboard and forgot about them. Which means I really didn’t need or want them that badly, right?

Well, when I sorted out a shelf in my study and found all these new notebooks, unused, I hauled them out, found the cash slip and put them in a bag.

That sparked the fire.

I then quickly went around the house, hunting for unused goods still in their original packaging that had been bought in the last 2 months.

A few days later I went to the shops and returned all those things. All in about 45 minutes. Driving there and back put it at just under an hour.

One of those things was a gorgeous, gorgeous brown leather handbag…. drool…. except… I have no brown clothes that fit me at the moment so it’ll be some time before I need one.

And if I were to be 100% honest, I already have two brown handbags, one of them leather (bought in Malaysia).

My reason for returning all these items?

Not needed.

Which is true.

My challenge to you this weekend is this – go around your house and collect all the things you thought you needed but haven’t even opened, and take them back to the store for a credit refund.

Who’s up for the challenge? Post your intention in the comments.

I will pick one of you to get a free copy of my financial freedom e-course 🙂

Question of the week – 6-week wait for January salaries?

I’m not sure what happens in the rest of the world but in South Africa, companies usually pay employees by 15 December, so they have money for Christmas.

That’s lovely in theory but it does mean there’s a long, long wait between the December and January salaries.

I wasn’t always as self-disciplined as I am now but I was always a quick learner.

After one really bad year where all the money was spent early on, I vowed to never get in that situation again.

We’ve never used credit cards so that was just not an option.

I’ve now done this for about 12 years and it works beautifully.

When I get paid in December, I move the money I’ll need for the 3 weeks in January plus a bit extra to a separate savings account.

Out of sight, out of mind or… what you don’t see, you can’t spend 🙂

It’s simple but very effective.

This way I always have money in January when everybody else is broke. And everybody thinks I’m very clever when I tell them my “tricks”.

What do you do about the long wait? Or what happens on your side of the world?

P.S. In the Organise your home system, there’s an ebook on finances called 10 steps to your financial freedom which has even more fantastic tips.

P.P.S. If you’re getting paid this week, my coaching challenge is to put the January money in another account.
